ExxonMobil knows industry

Today, about two-thirds of the products we make are used by commercial and industrial companies - including electric utilities, trucking and other commercial transportation, and heavy industries like steel and cement. Reducing emissions in these sectors will be key to meeting society’s climate goals. That’s why we’re scaling up carbon capture and storage, and the next generation of industrial fuels - like hydrogen - which can help industries meet their emissions-reduction goals while continuing to provide essential products for the world. Our combination of scale, technology, integration, and expertise makes us uniquely positioned to provide these new solutions for industry. We aim to use many of these same solutions to advance our own 2050 net-zero ambitions.

Industrial-scale solutions

Different industries will require different solutions when it comes to making meaningful progress on emissions-reduction efforts. 

We’re investing $17 billion in initiatives from 2022 through 2027 that will help advance, scale up and deploy a suite of technologies focused on reducing emissions from our own operated assets and those from others.

Carbon capture and storage

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is the process of capturing CO2 emissions and permanently storing them safely underground. This solution can be a good fit for industries like steel, cement and chemical manufacturing, which rely on heat-intensive processes and therefore have limited lower-emission alternatives. Today, these industries account for more than 25% of global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Using CCS can help reduce emissions from those industries at the source – before they reach the atmosphere.

ExxonMobil is advancing carbon capture projects around the world, including in Louisiana and Texas, and we’re continuing to expand our reach and help customers meet their emissions-reduction goals.

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is an abundant energy source that produces zero emissions at its point of use. It’s also versatile, able to be used for power generation, industrial processes and heavy-duty vehicles. Facilities that currently rely on natural gas can switch to hydrogen by upgrading or retrofitting existing natural gas systems – helping reduce both costs and emissions.

“Blue” hydrogen refers to hydrogen produced from natural gas and supported by carbon capture technology and other processes. Subject to final investment decision,1 we plan to build what is expected to be the world’s largest blue hydrogen plant in Baytown, Texas at planned startup in 2027-2028, and using this hydrogen could reduce site-wide CO2ꦰ emissions by up to 30% compared to current operations. We also plan to make this low-carbon hydrogen available to other Houston-area industrial facilities, to help them reduce their own emissions.

Biofuels

Today, transportation makes up nearly one-quarter of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. In the United States, more than half of greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector🧸 comes from passenger cars, medium- and heavy-duty trucks, and light-duty trucks, including sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and minivans. Biofuels made from renewable sources can keep the world moving while reducing emissions. We're leveraging our expertise in developing traditional fossil fuels to create scalable lower-emission biofuel alternatives for our customers.
