The role of chemical products
As of December 2022, we have processed nearly 15 million pounds of plastic waste at our Baytown Complex. We recently started up a large-scale advanced recycling facilityκ©² at the site – one of the largest advanced recycling facilities in North America, capable of processing more than 80 million pounds of plastic waste per year.
Beyond Baytown, we plan to expand annual advanced recycling capacity to 1 billion pounds by year-end 2026 across multiple sites globally. With effective government policies in place to modernize the recycling system and improve waste collection, more plastic materials can be collected, sorted and recycled, especially plastics that aren’t easily recycled today. At ExxonMobil, we are focusing a significant portion of our industry-leading R&D capabilities on developing performance products that enable reductions in plastic waste, as well as technology options that convert plastic waste to valuable products through advanced recycling.
